I was contacted by a friend of a friend who asked me if I would be willing to make her a cake that looked like a pizza. Challenge accepted! 🙂
I started by making two shallow 9 inch cakes, stacked and lightly covered in a layer of vanilla buttercream. Next, it was time to cover the cake in “dough”, which was made out of marshmallow fondant, and dyed an off white color to look like the color of pizza dough.
Well, as any pizza lover knows, you can’t bake it right unless you’ve got your sauce and your toppings on there first!
Before approaching toppings, I needed sauce. Using vanilla buttercream as my base, I used two different shades of red, and a little blue food dye to achieve a deep red color that replicated my favorite marinara sauce. I even used a ladle to spread it onto the “pizza” cake. 😀
Next, I decided it was time to make this pizza look like it had been cooked to crispy perfection. I used some ivory colored gel food dye straight from the jar, and rubbed it with a paper towel across the “dough” to achieve this crunchy look.
The next step was to add some cheese! I dyed some chunks of marshmallow fondant the colors of cheddar and mozzarella cheese, and froze them for a few hours. Next, I used a grater to shred up the cheese over the sauce.
Now this pizza was ready for toppings!
I decided on green peppers, pepperoni, and olives as my toppings. 🙂
The finished product was made to look “melted” by using a steamer gently over the finished product.
Delizioso!
