This cake was made for my twin brothers birthday. The cake was meant to echo their shared love of Super Mario Bros. while also conjuring up a bit of nostalgia, since they were turning 24. 🙂 I decided to draw inspiration from the video game itself and created a cake that looked like one of the ends of the green pipes the characters move through in the games. Marshmallow fondant dyed green covered the cake, with the center top instead being black to look like it was a deep hole in the pipe.
One of the most fun parts of creating this cake, was of course creating the heads of Mario and Luigi! I decided I wanted them to look like they were popping up out of the pipe. This entailed making their heads and hands (or gloves). I started with a wooden dowel and began shaping the heads and adding on features. Before I knew it, I had Mario and Luigi’s heads on sticks!
Next, I made their little white gloves out of some more marshmallow fondant, and stuck it all together on the cake. For an added touch, I cut out some small circles, and colored them a gold color to look like the coins in the video game!
